Spotify for business alternatives: background music services compared

Short answer: Spotify's support page says Spotify is only for personal, non-commercial use and can't be played publicly from businesses such as bars, restaurants and stores. Businesses use dedicated background music services instead. Soundtrack, Rockbot, Pandora CloudCover, Mood Media and FreqVault are five of them. They differ in catalogue, hardware, features and pricing model.

Facts below are taken from each provider's own website on 17 October 2026. Plans and prices change, so check each provider's site before you decide.

Why businesses look for a Spotify alternative

Spotify's Terms of Use grant "personal, non-commercial use" of the service (Spotify Terms of Use). Its support page says this means "you can't broadcast or play Spotify publicly from a business, such as bars, restaurants, schools, stores, salons, dance studios, radio stations, etc." For commercial environments, the same page points businesses to Soundtrack (Spotify Support).

FreqVault

FreqVault is a B2B venue music subscription: €25 per location per month, for business playback at registered locations, per the FreqVault Terms.

  • Built around day-parts. Curated experiences are tagged for mood, energy, BPM and genre, and a schedule moves them through the day.
  • Zones per room, each with its own experience and schedule, all in one dashboard, for one location or many.
  • Browser player on the device already connected to your speakers. No player hardware is needed. It streams in real time, so a stable internet connection is required, and it doesn't play offline.
  • Certificate PDF per location, from the dashboard, with a public verification page.
  • Support: available to venues worldwide, with dedicated support in Romania and the UAE.

The plan is €25 per location per month or €275 per location per year, excl. VAT. Every location starts with a 7-day free trial, no credit card needed at sign-up; it becomes paid only if you add a payment method and confirm. Monthly or yearly; cancel any time, effective at the end of the paid period. FreqVault's plan doesn't list audio messaging, digital signage, playlist import or a hardware player. If you need those, the providers above list them. See how FreqVault works for restaurants and hotels, or hear the demo.

Which one fits your venue?

  • You want a very large catalogue and playlist import: Soundtrack lists over 125 million tracks and importing playlists from Spotify.
  • You want music plus screens and messaging from one supplier: Rockbot, Pandora CloudCover and Mood Media all list messaging and signage products.
  • You want a dedicated player box: Pandora CloudCover offers the CloudBox, and Rockbot lists media players.
  • You want a flat price per location, scheduling by day-part and a browser player: FreqVault is €25 per location per month or €275 per location per year, with zones per room included.
  • You run a venue in Romania: compare local options such as AMBIENTERA with international services, and check the currency, VAT and trial terms of each.
